Wican is a women-led organization working in coastal Kerala, India. We empower women from marginalized communities through various initiatives like community mapping, theatre, and video documentation. Our goal is to strengthen these communities, give voice to their experiences, and advocate for their rights.

Women in coastal Kerala face unique challenges due to social and economic marginalization, coupled with the growing threat of climate change. Wican works to empower these women and provide them with tools to advocate for themselves and their communities.

These communities grapple with issues like gender inequality, limited livelihood opportunities, lack of access to education and healthcare, and increasing vulnerability to climate change.

We use various participatory approaches. Community mapping allows women to identify their needs and resources. Theatre (Chevittorma) empowers them to express themselves and raise awareness about social issues. Community video projects give them a platform to document their experiences and perspectives.

Community mapping involves women creating maps of their communities, identifying important locations, resources, and areas of concern. This empowers them to advocate for improvements and plan for the future.

Chevittorma is a form of community theatre used by Wican. Women use drama and performance to address social issues, raise awareness, and advocate for change within their communities.
